QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS BV FEMINA "J.C.K.'' asks for a good recipe for making soap. Rhubarb and Fig Jam "Preserves" (Mnmaku), would be grateful for a recipe lor making rhubarb and fig jam. Stains on Xylonite "M.H." sends this remedy:—Dip article into a solution of chloride of lime and water (I teaspoon to 1 cup) until the stains fade. Afterward rinse in clear water and dry away from light or fire. Stains on Jersey "Mere Male" washed his red and white football jersev in warm' soapy water. While it was drying the rain fell, causing the red to run and stain the rest of the garment. He would be grateful for a recipe for removing the stain. Stains on Window "M.H." suggests this course, provided the stains are on the glass. Rub over with a paste made of two cups of methylated spirits, two tablespoons of whiting and two tablespoons of ammonia. This will probably not remove the egg preserver, so try rubbing with strong vinegar or spirits of salt. As a last resort rub hard with hot caustic soda, which will certainly remove the stain, but is not very good for the glass, and should be followed by a good washing with clear water. Be careful not to let any of these liquids fall on the woodwork. Preserving Apples with Sulphur "Lorraine" sends this recipe:—Peel apples and cut into small quarters. Place a cocoa tin in the centre of an airtight, box (e.g. butter box), and pack apples around tin. Kill tin with red embers and a good tablespoon of .sulphur, put on the lid quickly, wrap the box m a blanket to prevent sulphur fumes from escaping, and leave for ten minutes. Open up, park apples in bottles, and screw down with rubber rings. Alter a few days, when the apples contract, refill bottles one from the other. Before using apples, wash in cold water, and cook them in their syrup with a little sugar added.
