HANAN DEFEATED MATHIESON DISQUALIFIED HIGH STANDARD REVEALED [nr TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL, Tuesday Three titles changed hands this evening at the opening of the New Zealand senior swimming championships at the Invercargill Municipal Baths. P. Hanan, Auckland, holder of the men's 100 yards free-style championship, was beaten by R. Hatchwell, Wellington. L. Newell, Canterbury, the one mile men's free-style champion, was beaten by A. T. F. Stokes, Canterbury, and P. E. Mathieson, Auckland, 400 metres men's backstroke champion, although he finished an easy first, was disqualified for incorrect turning;, and the title went to C. Cliff, Canterbury. There were some thrilling finishes during the evening and the standard of swimming was high, but on the whole the times were slower than at the most recent championship meetings.
