SPRINT BY PALUSTEE BRONWEN GOES PLEASINGLY POCKET VENUS MOVES FREELY Most of the work at Tnkanini yesterday was of the useful order. On tlio grass, where the poles were out 20ft., Pa lustre hit out pleasingly over half a mile in 51s. She could have done better and should strip at her best for her engagements at Rotorua.

Bromvon (Spinley) was worked over a mile, Bronze Trail (Green) accompanying her over the last five furlongs in 1.6 2-5. Bronwen, a winner at the mid-summer meeting at Ellerslie, promises to perform well in the Geyser Hack Handicap at Rotorua on Saturday. .

Princess Val (L, Clifford) worked over six furlongs at three-quarter pace. She is showing improved condition. Gladynev and Orelio

Gladynev was timed to run the last two furlongs of sound work in 26 l-ss. Orelio, who is carrying a bright appearance, worked steadily. Pocket Venus (Vaughan) hit out boldly over half a mile in 525. Our Jean (L. Clifford) ran the threo furlongs in 39 4-ss. Inquisitor (L. Clifford) and Ivy Willonyx (E. Smith) were not doing their best to run a mile in 1.53 .3-5, the last six furlongs in 1.23 2-5, and half-mile in 555. Silver Glow Progressing Silver Glow (L. Clifford), who appears to be on the improve, impressed more than Pleuron (Beguety) at the end of five furlongs in 1.5 4-5. Estro (Hatwell) completed her work with two furlongs in 25 2-os. Bachelor King (Walters) and Dauber (Bartle) ran five furlongs in 1.6 l-ss. Little Star (E. Clifford) ran the last three furlongs of half a mile in 395. Miss Eureka (E. Clifford) worked over six furlongs at 15s to the furlong. Bon Star (L. Clifford) defeated Gay Opal over half a mile in 51 3-ss, fair time for hacks. Esquire Beats Lysis Esquiro (Hatwell) finished in front of Lysis (Spinley), who did not make the turn well, at the close of three furlongs in 38 2-ss. Royevrus (E. Clifford), who has not done much fast work for some time, covered three. furlongs in 39 4-ss.

Valamito returned to track work and, although indulged in light work only, is apparently over his recent trouble. Solitary. Hot Box was taken home early in tho week and it is understood will be trained at Thames, Hie vacancy in F. Smith's stables has been filled by Oriental Bay, who was among the track workers on the plough yesterd_ay.

Most of the work this morning was done on the plough.

On the plough Pango was given easy exorcise by J* McDowell, who will ride him at Hawera He looks well, but his chances would be improved if the sting were out of the ground. Bumble (Ireland) was in front of Sudan ("W. J. Broughton) at the end of seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. 1 hey were together until just short of the post, when Bumble drew away. Bumble will be ridden at Hawera by R. B. Ireland. Sudan, engaged on the second day, will be ridden by G. it. Tatterall, who is also booked for Brazen King, Ramleh and Darthura. L. G. Morris worked all his horses on the plough, Ecstatic, Laughing Lass and Oratory each going half a mile ill even time. The others were exercised. The Buzzer was sent north tonight. He is to be turned out for a couple of months at To Awamutu. Newbury Queen, Vascones and Pas de Clieval, separately, were sprinted down the straight. Taumau (A. McDonald) and Beaupartir (Ireland) strode over the last six of seven furlongs in 1.25. Corroboree placed seven furlongs behind in 1.36,. the last six in 1.22 4-5. He went particularly well and should be in good nick for Woodville. Old Bill (Tattersall) went nicely over the last six of seven furlongs in 1.21.

The fastest five of the morning was credited to Florence Mills (lattersall), who ran 1.6, the last three in 40s.

Deflation (Kilmister), after being last away, beat Moradabad (Bowden) and Caution (Broughton) over four furlongs in 545. On the course proper the two-year-olds Millanient (Broughton) and Chevy Chase (Tattersall) were well clear of Thrasos (S. Anderson) at the end of half a mile in 52 3-ss, the best of the morning over the distance. They ran the last three in 38 2-ss.

QUEEN'S COUNTY GOES FAST

Some smart novice pacers were seen at the Wellington Trotting Club's Summer Meeting, and one who improved with each race was Joan Grattan. She was narrowly beaten in the Gracelield Trial Handicap by Poker Face, who went 3.21 3-5, but the latter had her turn in winning the Probationers' Handicap off 3.5 in 2.45 2-5. Coming into the 3.38 class, Joan Grattan was second in the Eastbourne Handicap to Attain, returning 3.18 2-s—a remarkable effort for one just removed from novice ranks.

Another maiden, Petite, unplaced the first day, was successful on Saturday in 3.20 4-5 off 3.43, and the three-year-old Talalc, fourth on the first day, won at her next appearance in 2.47 1-5 off 3.5.

Queen's County, a consistent novice, was beaten into second place after going 2.45 3-5, and had a similar fate on Saturday, registering 3.21 1-5.
