Dear Lad
I saw you sprint across the lawn, I saw you leap the Wall; I watched you running up the steps, You never paused at all. You hailed me, and without a thought You shouted out to say: "I'm coming!" and at once you came, In your impulsive way. And then, while sitting by the stream And laughing up at me, You said, "I'd lik.c to be a man, That's what I'd like to be." The way you said it Was so droll, You took me by surprise; But oh. the stars I saw, dear lad, All dancing in your eyes I Yet how could I make answer then (Or, answering, explain) That best of all I'd like to be A boy like you again? I might perhaps have told you all Had you had time to stay; But just as I began you fled, In your impulsive way. —H.L.G.
