PUMICE LANDS SCHEME

PROGRESS NEAR TOKOROA PROBLEM OF CONSOLIDATION [from our own correspondent] PTJTARURU, Friday Good progress is being . made with the breaking in of the education block of 5000 acres, five miles south of Tokoroa. The work, which is under the control of the Lands and Survey Department, is being carried out by unemployed labour, a full wages subsidy being paid by the Government under scheme 13. As no appreciable fall of rain had been experienced for some weeks past the heavy fall in the early part of this week has proved of the greatest benefit. In the spring 160 acres were put down in grass, best certified seed mijturo being used. A further 240 acres is now being prepared and will bo grassed this autumn. The chief difficulty encountered so far has been that of consolidating the soil, which is of a light, porous nature. Twenty men are at present in camp on the block, which is one of a number of similar areas in the pumice lands being brought under cultivation on a largo scale by the Government. Others are at Reporoa, Broadlauds and Edgecuinbe.
