DRINK AT DANCES
MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT "TIMES HAVE CHANGED" FOUR YOUTHS PROSECUTED "You could have had quite a lot of fun at the dance without liquor; times have changed, but there used to be dances where there was no liquor and they were enjoyable," said Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., when four youths were charged in the Police Court yesterday with taking liquor into a no licence area. The defendants were Ivan Frederick George Wilson, Peter Davis, John Murray and Ilichard McGregor Murray. Constable Walton said ho and another constable were on duty near a dance hall at Point Chevalier on November 19 and at about 8.30 p.m. their attention was attracted by a young man at a car. Witness examined the car and found 13 quart bottles of beer. Wilson came out of the dance hall and said he was the driver of the car. He had no authority to take the liquor to Point Chevalier, which was part of the Grey Lynn no licence area. The young men were quite sober. The defendant Davis said he bought the liquor and they intended taking it to a party after the dance. Sub-Inspector Fox said the young men concerned had given no trouble, but the offence was the sort of thing that led to trouble which caused the police considerable concern. -"If it is made expensive for them to take liquor out there it may stop it," said the magistrate, in imposing a fine of £2, with costs, in each case.
