Sir, —Re "Labour's" letter which appeared in Wednesday's Herald. He states "The rental charge (for the State houses) represents a rate of interest beyond the wildest dreams of the average landlord." I am living in one of those houses that "Labour" speaks of. It was built about 20 years ago at less than half the cost of the average State house of to-day, and it is riddled with borer. It is let to a number of tenants room by room with a gas ring, and the total rent is over nine pounds a week. A friend of mine has one of the small State cottages, four rooms and kitchenette, replete with all modern conveniences, for which he pays 19s per week. The people in this town are paying more than that for one room. I could take "Labour" to a block of four houses built to the same specifications as the State houses, except that the only heart timber that is in got there by mistake. They were completed within the last six months and are rented to-day at £2 10s per week as against £1 7s 6d for the equivalent in the State houses. F.C.
