ORAKEI LAND DISPUTE
RECENT DECISION MAORIS TAKE LEGAL ADVICE The decisions of tho Royal Commission regarding the ownership of lands at Orakei were discussed at a meeting of Orakei Maoris hold on Sunday. The Royal Commissioner, Mr. Justice Kennedy, generally decided the matters in dispute in favour of the Crown and against the claims put forward by tho Maoris. He held that the price paid by the Crown for the area known as the church site on the hill was fair and reasonable, and that there was good reason why the Maoris should cease to occupy the present structures on it. He also found that the Crown had validly purchased and held an area of six or seven acres from Wiremu Watene. There are still two areas left for native occupation—one of 12 acres at the back of tho Orakei settlement and one of 2b acres on the flat near the waterfront road.
After the position had been fully discussed at the meeting, it was decided to take legal advice as to the next step, as the Maoris are unwilling to leave their old homes.
