CHILE DISASTER

DEAD TOTAL 30,000 EARTHQUAKE'S TOLL ILLNESS AND SUFFERING MISERY OF REFUGEES By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Independent Cable Servico NEW YORK, Jan. 29 The newspapers estimate that the dead in the Chilian earthquake will number at least 30,000, and the injured 60,000, says a message from Santiago. Most of the bodies are still buried under tons of debris, constituting a grave menace to health. Polluted water and a shortage of food are causing widespread illness and suffering. Torrential rains have hampered rescue work and added to the misery of the refugees. The authorities have ordered the evacuation of the devastated cities. The ruins are being dynamited and set on fire to prevent epidemics. The earthquake struck suddenly, without the usual tremors.
