POWER FAILURES
SUPPLY TO WHANGAREI TEMPORARY LINE IN USE [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Monday The Whangarei borough electrical supply failed three times this morning owing to breakdowns at the Portland end of the main transmission line. The Whangarei supply is drawn from the Portland Cement Company's power station at Wairoa Falls through the sub-6tation at the cement works at Portland. Normally there are two main lines, but alterations are being effected to these, and a temporary lino has been arranged, so that when faults developed in the latter there was not the alternative line to depend on. The present alterations are designed to prevent birds getting in where the main transmission lines enter the substation at Whangarei and causing short circuiting. The faults this morning were soon found and the current again made available, but while the power was off the signalling system at the Whangarei railway station and the machinery at the Whangarei dairy factory were out of commission.
