THE MEN'S SINGLES ( WINS 'IN STRAIGHT SETS STURT DEFEATS MAYSON • GUNN BEATEN BY BEDFORD Saturday's play in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual provincial championship tournament produced further surprises, if not actual sensations, so far as the semi-final matches of the men's singles were concerned. The result of the match between N. F. Bedford and J. W. Gunn appeared difficult to forecast, but Bedford won in straight sets. In the succeeding match J. T. Mayson was generally expected to eliminate N. G. Sturt, buc a magnificent effort on tho part, of the latter saw him successful, also in straight sets. Bedford and Sturt will contest tho final this afternoon. After their win over D. G. France and N. G. Sturt, J. C. Charters and R. G. Pattinson were favourites for the semi-final of the men's doubles, but they wero outplayed by R. W. Smith and M. T. Wilson. Misses B. L. Bishop and P. Cooke, holders of the ladies' championship, won their semi-final against Misses B. Griffiths and J. St. Georee and they will meet Misses N. and M. Beverley in the final to-day. Fine Performance A very fine performance was registered by W. T. Pountney and Miss N. Beverley in winning the combined doubles championship., They scored a convincing win over, R. W. Smith and Miss P. Cooke in the final. Miss P. Mitchell completed a family success when she won the final of tho ladies' B grade singles, her,, brother having been successful in the men's B grade the previous day. Miss Mitchell played Miss-J. Howie in the final, and, although it appeared at one stage as if she would suffer defeat, she gradually wore her opponent down with steady play in which she chased every shot and made superior placements. The weather conditions varied on Saturday/ it being dull and cool in the morning, but later the muggy heat was a little oppressive. There was a large attendance of spectators and an ieven larger crowd is expected this afternoon for the finals of the senior events. Bedford and Sturt will meet in the men's singles final at one o'clock and Misses M. Beverley and Pluinmer will then contest the ladies' singles final. These matches will be followed by the finals of the men's doubles and combined doubles. Good Junior Standard Ths progress of the intermediate and junior championships was followed with a good deal of interest and the standard of play all round was very good. In conjunction with the finals in the senior grade to-day the intermediate u and junior sections will be completed, a start being made with thq latter at 9.30 a.m. Following were the results of Saturday's matches: — MEN'S SINGLES Semi-finals.—N.
