PINE AND GUM TREES LOSS ON AOROA PROPERTY [I)Y TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT! DARGAYILLE, Thursday Twelve acres of pine and gum trees in a 30-year-old plantation on Mr. A. E. Harding's property at Aoroa were destroyed by fire yesterday. Originating in a swamp, the fire swept across the back of the Aoroa block and flames 100 ft. in height devoured the trees. Mr. Harding and 12 others made strenuous efforts to check the fire, but the 12 acres of trees were lost before the flames were under control. The swamp fire had been smouldering for some days. RUBBISH PIT OUTBREAK BRIGADE SAVES HOUSES [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON, Thursday A fire broke out in • the Hamilton rubbish pit at Whitiora at an early hour this morning and spread to an area of several acres of gorse and scrub in the gully in which the pit is situated. There was danger of the fire spreading to house properties in the vicinity, but the Hamilton Fire Brigade, after several hours' work, suppressed the outbreak.
