BIG GATE TAKINGS
RUGBY TEST IN AFRICA The gross takings for the first Rugby test match between tho Springboks "and the British team at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, during the recent season exceeded the entire cost of the tour. This remarkable fact is disclosed in the financial statement issued the other day. More money was taken in the record-breaking Johannesburg test than at both the F<>rt Elizabeth and the Newlands tests combined! The amount was £14,095. Takings in the second test at Port Elizabeth came to £6455 and in the final test at Newlands £4720. The total cost of the tour, from the moment the British team was assembled in Britain to the time of its return, was £11,300. It is interesting to compare the costs of eome recent Rugby tours of South Africa. The 1924 visit of the British team involved an expenditure of £7863, and that of New Zealand in 1928, £14,230. South African critics expect all previous financial returns to be put in tha shade during the tour of the All Blacks in 1940.
