MEAT IN BRITAIN
NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE REDUCED QUOTA ALLOWANCE RESULT OF EAGER BUYING LONDON, Dec. 28 Tho Australian Associated Press says that next week the Empire Beef Council will start the preliminaries for the licensing scheme for the regulation of mutton and lamb imports from the j Dominions on the lines of the Governi ment's decision .of December 20. j There is little doubt that control has ! been necessitated to a large degree by tho success of New Zealand's publicity, which has resulted in housewives asking for frozen mutton and lamb instead of fresh United Kingdom products. I It is expected that the scheme will ; open early in January. It is learned I that Australia and Now Zealand have i accepted tho new policy, though New Zealand first raised strong objections. Britain finally pointed out that re- : strictions wero becoming so essential that she was obliged to institute them with or without agreement by the j Dominions. Replying to claims that foreign imports should be restricted before limitation of Dominion products, it is pointed out that tho important aspect of the Government's new policy is the retention of tho Beef Council, not only to control imports, but also to investigate possibilities of increasing meat consumption at home and abroad.
