THE NO. IB SCHEME EXTENSION FOR MONTH REVIEW AFTER HOLIDAYS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, announced to-day that the Government had decided to continue the operation of the No. 13 Scheme for the relief of unemployment until January 31. It had been announced previously that this method of providing a fullwage subsidy on work of a local or national character which is of public utility would be discontinued at the end of this year, but the Minister added that the question of continuing the scheme would bo reviewed aftor the holidays. Hundreds of men employed under the scheme by local bodies in the Auckland ai'ea aro affected by the decision. Uncertainty as to whether their services would bo continued in the now year has boon relieved at least temporarily. All employing authorities who have been empowered to employ men undjr the scheme are being advised that they may continue this form of employment after tho holidays and that the necessary monetary commitments will be arranged by the Labour Department.^ It is understood that tho men will now resume work on January 9 after tho holiday period. The extension of the scheme to January 31 will therefore give them approximately three weeks' further employment at least.
