MEDICAL RESEABCH TUBERCULOSIS PROBLEMS MONEY FROM TRAVIS BEQUEST WORK AT OTAGO UNIVERSITY [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday More than £12.000 will bo spent on research into tuberculosis at the Medical School of tlu- University of Otago over u period of seven years out of the income from the Travis Bequest, according to an announcement made this evening by the chairman of the board of trustees, Mr. J. W. Bean land. The bequest, which was made under the will of Mr. W. H. Travis, of Christchurch, who died in June, 1927, amounted to about £50,000, and tho testator stipulated that the income was to be spent on research into, tuberculosis and cancer. Tho other trustees under the chairmanship of Mj'. Beanland are Mr. IT. A. Young, S.M., and Dr. C. T. Hand Newton. Tho secretary is Mr. J. MaAvson' Stewart. Statement by Trustees The following, statement has been issued by the board.:—"Tho trustees were appointed in March of this year and since then have devoted a great deal of time to consolidating the finances of the trust and in outlining a programme for the expenditure of tho income—having regard to the provisions of the will of the late Mr. \\ . H. Travis. Tliev have assisted the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society by continuing to contribute toward the upkeep of the Travis Radiological Laboratory. No "Frittering Away" "The trustees, being of the opinion that the trust funds should not be frittered away in small grants, have now decided to concentrate on one carefully considered plan and have come to the decision to carry out a scheme of research work into tuberculosis by arrangement with tho University of Otago. Tho research work will bo directed toward some of tho unsolved problems of tuberculosis; Some of the problems are indeed purely local and must sooner or later bo solved here. These problems are of fundamental importance and arc not merely connected with the treatment of the disease, but above all with its eradication. "The organisation of the details will be left to the Otago University Council. The trustees of the Travis Trust will pay the necessary salaries of a research officer and assistant to carry out the work-"
