OBITUARY
MR. A. R. P. HOPKINS LONG AND VARIED LIFE The death occurred at his home at Takapuna yesterday of Mr. Arthur Richard Phelps Hopkins, formerly a prominent figure in the Canterbury frozen meat industry, aged 80. Born at Tiverton, Devonshire, Mr. Hopkins had an adventurous career as a boy and young man as apprentice and later mate in clippers transporting wool from Australia to England. He served for a period in the famous Thermopylae and also recruited labour under the Australian Government off the Queensland coast and in the Islands. His calling took him to Russell in the days of tho whalers, and he took part in the Coromandel gold rush. After .settling in New Zealand, Mr. Hopkins worked for a time with Baber and Son, grain merchants, fti Cnristchurch, and subsequently came to Auckland. He returned to Christchurch and entered the service of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Limited, and remained with the firm until his retirement in 1920. He became managor and superintendent of the three works of tho company at Belfast, Ashburton and Timaru. Mr. Hopkins had lived in the Auckland district since his retirement, first on his fruit farm at Birkdalo, and more recently at Takapuna. He is survived by his wife and seven sons.
DR. T. JULIAN [by TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION'] BLENHEIM, Wednesday The death has occurred of Dr. Thaddeus Julian, aged 84, formecly of Christchurch. He was tho father of Dr. T. Julian, medical superintendent of hospitals in Marlborough. mr. a. Mcdonald [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] THAMES, Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr. Alexander McDonald, of Paeroa, aged 73. Mr. McDonald was born in Auckland and came to Thames with his parents when he was two years of age. He was educated at the Kauaeranga School and later was apprenticed to A. and G. Price, Limited, as a boilcrmaker. After several years at the foundry ho joined the Northern Steamship Company and was master of tho tug plying between Paeroa and To Arolia. This position he held for 40 years. He is survived by his wife and four sons.
MR. W. J. WOOD [UY TKLKGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] HASTINGS, Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr. Walter John Wood, a well-known ownertrainer. Ho was born in Canterbury and was a successful amateur rider and prominent in athletic circles. About 20 years ago he left Canterbury and came to Hawko's Bay, where he took up a farm at Waipawa. Ho bred Minstrel Boy, Chopin and others. He was president of the Waipawa Racing Club (now in recess) for many years. Mr. Wood is survived by his widow.
