LICENSING OF TAXIS
CHANGE MADE AT THAMES NOW UNDER TRANSPORT ACT As a result of an application by taxi owners in Thames to the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, to bp brought under the Transport Act, their licences in future will be issued bv the No. 1 Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J Phelan. A statement to the effect that he had received this information from the Minister was made by Mr. Phelan yesterday. The Thames application is exactly parallel to tho move that has been made by taxi owners in Hamilton, where Mr. Phelan will conduct a special sitting to-morrow. Later, a special sitting will bo held in Thames. The Transport Act is claimed to be considerably wider in its ramifications than the Municipal Corporations Act for the control of road vehicles, and a fuller opportunity for the statement of a case is provided in the hearings that are conducted by the authority. The rights of applicants and objectors under tho Municipal Corporations Act are stated to bo very limited.
