GLOUCESTER PARK

FOOTBALL CLUB'S REQUEST i COUNCIL REFUSES LEASE An offer by the Manukau Rugby League Football Club to lease Gloucester Park, formerly known as Ged.des Basin, on the Manukau foreshore at Onehunga, came before the Oneliunga Borough Council last night. This airea of 18 acres wi:s drained of tidal water some four years ago and approximately £4500 was expended in transforming it into a sports ground. For a time it was used for motor-car races, but for tho past' three years it has lain idle, returning no revenue to the council. In his letter to the council Mr. N. A. Ching, on behalf of the Manukau Rugby League Football Club, offered to lease the ground for 10 years at. a rental of £25 a year, -with the right of further renewal, and a further £25 a year if tho lease of a cottage was included. Tho club, ho wrote, would undertake to spend at least £IOO a year on improvements and buildings. In the opinion of Mr. W. J. Moore it was inadvisable at the present time to grant a lease of Gloucester Park, in view of its future potentialities, and on his motion this course was adopted.
