FIFTY YEARS AGO
PACIFIC CABLE SCHEME Strenuous efforts for the construction of a Pacific cable were being made in England $0 years ago. The following message, Sent by Press Association from London, appeared in the New Zealand Hebald of November 24, 1888: "Two hundred persons were present at a meeting to-day to discuss toe question of the Pacific cable. Sir Oswald Smith, of Canada, moved and Mr. Donatt, of Dalgety and Company seconded a resolution to the effect that, in view of the discontent with the Eastern Extension Company., the meeting pledge itself to support a cable by a Pacific route via the Hervey, Fanning Islands, Samoa, Fiji and _ New Zealand, provided the custom of the various Governments was given, and a guarantee extending over 25 years. The resolution was carried. It was announced that, the company had determined to construct the cable whether a guarantee was given or not. lne meeting was presided over by Lora Winchelsea. Many merchants ana others were present. The motion in favour of the cable was carried witn enthusiasm."
