MILLERTON DISPUTE
NO SETTLEMENT BEACHED COAL MINERS STILL IDLE SPREAD OF TROUBLE FEARED [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WESTPORT, Tuesday A conference between the Millerton Miners' Union and the management of the Westport Coal Company over the dispute concerned with the employment of shiftmen on work, which the latter regarded as outside their agreement, failed to reach settlement. The Millerton mine is still"idle. •• The Millerton mine has been idle since November 10, when two shiftmen who were asked to do picking and filling work declined unless paid ,an extra Is a da}-, as they claimed that this type of work did not come within the terms of their agreement. As no agreement was reached, the two men left the mine and the other workers followed them out. As the conference between the union and the company has proved fruitless, there is a strong possibility of the stoppage spreading to other mines in the Buller district.
