REMOVAL OF SAND

USE IN NEW INDUSTRY .SITE ON THE WEST COAST Authority to remove sand from the Auckland Harbour Board's reserve at Whatipu, on the west coast, was sought by Messrs. Macky and Campbell at a meeting of the Harbour Board yesterday on behalf of clients who contemplated tho establishment of a new industry. Tho chairman of tho board, Mr. W* B.' Darlow, said the proposed industry related to the manufacture of building materials. Tho superintendent, Mr. -D. Holderness, said there was coustant encroachment of sand washed ashore and subsequently blown inland at Whatipu, and he saw no objection to its removal provided tho work was carried out in a controlled and orderly manner. The sand was not only useless to the board, but it was actually harmful, aud he suggested that its removal should be permitted at a low royalty of 3d a cubic yard. "The applicants desire to ensure continuity of supply, but I do not consider anything in the nature of a lease should be given unless and until the proposed industry has been successfully established and the effect of the operations has been indicated," Mr. Holderness added. . , ~ The superintendents report was adopted. __________
