ENTERTAINMENTS

REGENT THEATRE A feast of mirth is provided by Laurel and Hardy in their new comedy, "Swiss Miss," which is at present delighting large audiences at the Regent Theatre. The inimitable pair rise to dizzy heights of mirth in this new production, which is notable for its exceptionally fine music and pleasing Swiss settings. The film is especially notable lor the first appearance on the screen of the vivacious Viennese actress Delia Lind, who has the main feminine role in the production. There is an excellent supporting programme. ST. JAMES' THEATRE Auckland theatre-goers who have seen the brilliant Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production "Man-Proof" at St. James' Theatre are highly enthusiastic over the merits of the film, which is Undoubtedly one of the cleverest pieces of entertainment seen here for some time. Myrna Loy surpasses all her previous performances with her portrayal of Mimi Swift, the girl who finds herself a bridesmaid itt the wedding of the man sho had hoped Mould marry her. Walter Pidgeon, Rosalind Russell and Franchot Tone are other members of a large cast. Something entirely new in the realm of screen entertainment is to be presented at St. .James' Theatre on Friday, when the New Universal production "Letter of Introduction" will bo shown. The film is notable for the introduction of Charlie McCarthy, famous ventriloquist's dummy, who is at present proving a sensation on the American stage. The talented actress Andrea Leeds has; the main rolo in the production, in which she is supported by George Murphy, Adolphe Meniou and Edgar Bergen. MAYFAIR THEATRE The inimitable English comedian, Will Hay, is seen at his funniest in '"Convict 99" the outstanding comedy which is proving an extremely popular attraction at the Mayfair Theatre. Also on the programme is the romantic comedy "Bank Holiday," which has as its main players John Lodge and Margaret Loekwood. The programme is one that will appeal to theatre-goers of even the most fastidious taste. MAJESTIC THEATRE Hailed as a fitting sequel to the dramatic film "Fury," which was made by the same producers, "You and Me," the outstanding production at present at the Majestic Theatre, provides firstclass entertainment. Sylvia Sidney and George l'alt appear in the main roles and both give gripping portrayals .John Howard plays the role of "Sapper's" intrepid amateur detective in "Bulldog Drummond in Africa," which is the second full-length attraction. CIVIC THEATRE A gay ami romantic htory of three beautiful girls who go in search of millionaire husbands is told in "Three Blind Mice," the delightful comedyromance which is at present attracting large audiences to the Civic Theatre. Loretta Voting, Marjoric Weaver and Pauline Moore appear as the three adventurous sisters, while Joel McCrea is seen in the leading male role. Other prominent members of the cast of this entertaining production are David ! Niven, who is rapidly winning an army of admirers for his drollery on the screen, and Binnie Barnes. . TIVOLI THEATRE The building of the dam to harness the waters of the mighty Colorado River in" America provides the background for the interesting film "Boulder Dam," which heads the wellbalanced programme at the Tivoli Theatre to-night, when guest-night concessions will be available. The leading roles are taken by Ross Alexander and Patricia Ellis. Good performances are given by Humphrey Bogart and Beverley Roberts in the drama "Two Against the World." which is the second attraction. Interesting supporting features include a two-reel comedy, a musical and a novelty film. EMBASSY THEATRE Based on incidents which occurred during the life of David Garrick, famous stage actor of the 18th century, "The Great Garrick," the enthralling romantic comedy at present enjoying an extended season at the Embassy Theatre, is a production well above the average. Brian Aherne is seen in the title role, in which lie receives excellent support from Olivia de Havilland and Edward Everett Horton. STRAND THEATRE One of the cleverest and most entertaining films brought to the screen for a considerable time is "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife," the present main attraction on the current programme at the Strand Theatre. Gary Cooper and Claudette Colbert have the leading roles and both give stimulating performances. An excellent supporting programme includes a further instalment of the instructive "March of Time" series. CRYSTAL PALACE AND RIALTO The English comedian, George Form by, continues his success on the screen in the amusing film "Keep Fit," which heads the double-feature programme at the Crystal Palace and Rialto Theatres to-night. The mystery film "House of a Thousand Candles," is the. second attraction. TUDOR CINEMA "Beg. Borrow or Steal," which has proved to be one of the most popular comedies to be shown in Auckland for some time, will be presented at the Tudor Cinema to-night. There is an enjoyable associate programme. ASTOR THEATRE " And So They Were Married" and "Times Square Playboy" comprise the well-balanced programme at the Astor Theatre to-night. Newsreels will also be shown. STATE THEATRE An insight into conditions in Germany after the Great War is given in the film "Three Comrades," which will continue its season at the State Theatre to-night. The chief roles are taken by Robert Taylor, Margaret Sullavaii and Eranchot Tone. STAR CINEMA A splendid programme is offered at the Star Cinema to-day when the exciting crime drama "Thief Meets Thief" and the Wheeler and Woolsey comedy "High Flyers" will be shown. PRINCE EDWARD THEATRE A splendid double-feature programme including the films "Kind Lady" and "Pursuit" will bo presented at the Prince Edward Theatre to-night. Interesting newsreels will also be shown. LONDON CINEMA Excellent entertainment is oifercd at the London Cinema to-day, when a double-feature programme, including the films "Here Comes Trouble" an 3 "High Tension," will be presented.
