SICK PAY BENEFITS RETIREMENT OF EMPLOYEES AUCKLAND POWER BOARD STAFF The provision of sick pay in the light of the benefits which would be payable under the Social Security Act is to be the subject of a report prepared by the general manager, Mr. R. 11. Bartley, for the Auckland Electric-Power Board. This decision was made by the board in committee and confirmed at its meeting yesterday. The secretary, Mr. N. M. Speer, reported that it would be necessary to consider the board's arrangements regarding sick pay and similar provisions, as, under the Social Security Act, certain fixed benefits were payable to employees and obviously this would have a bearing on the board's policy. Provision was also now made for age benefit to be payable at the ago of 60, and it would bo necessary for the board to determine whether all employees should bo automatically retired upon reaching that age, so that they might be replaced with younger men, possibly unemployed. It was also decided to communicate with the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, suggesting that the board would be happy to co-operate in the payment of sick and any other benefits which might conveniently be administered through the board. At the same time, an indication was sought of the Government's intention in relation to the retirement of employees on reaching the age of 60.
