EIGHT CALLS IN DAY NO SERIOUS DAMAGE DONE OUTBREAK IN PASSENGER BUS With the advent of summer conditions fires aro becoming more prevalent in Auckland and yesterday no fewer than five calls were answered by machines from tho Central and suburban stations. In no case was serious damage caused. Three further calls, which proved to be false alarms, were attended by a machine from tho Central station during tho day. Tho Central brigade was called at 7.39 a.m. to an outbreak of fire in a passenger bus at tho bus terminal. Tho floorboards of tho vehiclo, which belonged to the Passenger Transport Company, Limited, became ignited through coming into contact with a hot exhaust pipe. The flames were extinguished with a first-aid outfit, only slight damage being done to the flooring of tho bus. Machines from tho Remuera and Great South Road stations attended a wash-house fire at the residence of Mr. C. R. Gibb, Korau Street, Ono Tree Hill, at 11.15 a.m. Tho weather boarding of the \yash-house, a table and some articles of clothing were damaged. Little difficulty was experienced by the Mount Albert brigade in beating out a gorse fire which occurred in a section in Taylor Road, Mount Albert, at 1.43 p.m. Sacks were used by members of the Birkenhead brigade to extinguish a similar outbreak which occurred in Killarney Road shortly bofore 10 o'clock yesterday morning. A house at 14 Angelsea Street, Ponsonby, was tho scene of another fire in tho afternoon. When machines from the Central and Ponsonby stations arrived the firemen discovered that tho wash-fyouse, which is underneath tho kitchen, and a portion of the kitchen woro ablaze, both being damaged. Peoplo carelessly knocking against private fire alarm installations are thought to have caused tho three false alarms which were answered by a machine from the Central station during the day. RACE GRANDSTAND OUTBREAKS AT TE EAI'A STRONG WIND BLOWING PROMPT ACTION BY POLICE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday The large open grandstand at tho Te Rapa racecourse caught fire twice during tho progress of the Waikato Racing Club's meeting to-day. A very strong wind was blowing at tho time and the wooden floor of the stand was well ablaze on both occasions when the outbreaks were discovered. Constable J. Richardson extinguished the first fire and Sergeant H. Fryer was responsible for quelling the second outbreak. The damage was not serious. TIMBER MILL DAMAGE WATER SUPPLY CUT OFF [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PAEROA, Monday A fire which brqke out in a pile of refuso timber used for firing tho engine threatened Mr. H. Evans' timber mill about noon to-day. Before the outbreak could damage a planing machine the employees, who had just returned from lunch, put out that portion of tho blaze, but tho pile of refuso timber burned strongly until the fire brigado arrived. Owing to the water being cut off for repairs, there was very little pressure, but fortunately the vtind was blowing away from the piled sawn timber. The brigade soon extinguished the fire.
