DROWNED IN RIVER
YOUNG MAN WITH NET FALL INTO DEEP HOLE DANGER REALISED TOO LATE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WESTPORT, Sunday A young man was drowned while trawling in tho Totara River yesterday afternoon. Ho stepped into a deep bole whilo holding the trawling net and was caught by a heavy sea before ho could recover. Tho victim was: Ernest John Fox, single, a<ied 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fox, of Tauranga Bay. Together with another young man, Mr. Ernest Herring, Mr. Fox went to the Totara River early yesterday afternoon with a trawling net, which the two men dragged down tho river. Mr. Fox was walking in the river holding one ond of tho not when Mr. Herring realised that his companion was ncaring a deep hole. Ho called out to warn him, but Mr. Fox suddenly floundered into tho hole. Thero was a swell running at tho time and before lie could make an effort to save himself, Mr. Fox was swept under by a large wave. Jlr. Herring endeavoured to savo him but was unsuccessful. Assistanco was summoned, but although a search was mado for tho drowned man his body was not discovered until this morning. It had then been washed up on tho shore. At an inquest opened later a verdict was returned of accidental drowning.
