TRIALS ON GRASS

OUR JEAN SHOWS SPEED ATTRACTIVE HALF IN 48 2-5S IMPROVEMENT OF FULL HAND I With the grass in excellent order at Taknnini yesterday, there were some fast gallops, the most interesting being that of Our Joan, a maiden candidate i for two-year-old honours at To Rapa on Saturday. Ridden by L. H. Clifford, who is to, ride her on Saturday, and in company* with Hunting Capo (Sargent) and Gay ' Opal (Coleman). sho was given bar- ' rier practice, and'from a good despatch ' Our Jean soon singled herself out to } finish attractively in 48 2-5s for half a mile. Sho camo home a few lengths ' in front of the other pair. The half- | milo was timed from a galloping start, the first two furlongs being run slightly downhill in 23 2-ss. Her trial was run ! the right-handed way. Others to gallop right-handed were Hunter's Hose (E. Smith), who de--1 feated Loch Mara (Quedley) comfortably over fitfo furlongs in 1.4 1-5. > Three Furlongs by Orelio i Most of the galloping was lefthanded, Orelio (Bartle) being credited with the fastest three furlongs, run ' in 36 l-ss. This two-year-old did his work attractively and is regaVded as a certain starter at tho approaching Ellerslie fixture. Inver (Inglis) and Anion (Bartle) were at close quarters at the end of five furlongs, run in 1.3 2-5. Proud Fox (G. Smith) and Gladynov (Collett) were doing their best, to run three furlongs [together in 36 2-ss, Both two-year-olds are on the improve. Hot Box (Inglis) was going better than Arvakur (Stratton) at tho end of five furlongs run in 1.4. Pleuron (Boguely) ran from tho halfmile disc home in 525, while Poker Dice (Coleman) was sent half a mile, the last three taking 37 l-ss. Bon Star (E. Smith), who is coming . through his preparation soundly, showed . lip. well in_ company with Pocket Venus (Coleman) over half a mile run in 50s. Next Race lor Royevrus Parquet and White Mark were companions at useful work, sprinting home at top down the straight. Bound Up's task' was not against time, but he bore an improved appearance. Royevrus was indulged iu useful work only. Ho is intended as a starter in the Hamilton Handicap, of a mile and a-quarter, on the second day of the Waikato meeting. Anopheles was among those worked on the grass, but not against time. She carries no surplus condition and a few: smart gallops before Christmas should bring her up to her best to contest the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Full Hand's success was not largely anticipated at Takanini. Although tho son of Volimond made some appearances on the grasps, ho had most of his preparation on the plough track, which does not fully engage the attention of track-watchers. It was generally believed he may have needed more actual racing experience, which was mainly tho reason why he carried meagre support on Monday. Evidently his race of Saturday worked more improvement in him than was generally expected. a , : :.b ELLERSLIE GALLOPS LA VIE'S GOOD HALF-MILE FIVE FURLONGS BY ODTAA ..- \ , The No. 2 grass track, with the poles out sft., whs open for galloping at ; Ellerslie yesterday morning but the majority of horses who raced at Avondale were restricted to easy tasks. Konneta (Coon) and High Caste (Markwick) were companions over three furlongs in 375, finishing on . terms. Konneta went with plenty of dash and was keen to go faster. King Rod (Kerr) traversed a round in 1.54, the last seven furlongs in 1.41 and tho half-mile in 55 2-ss. He moved with more freedom than usually and is standing up to his preparation in good style. Chelandry (Treinain) and tho Tea Tray—Tambourine gelding- (Cammick) finished on terms at the end of half a mile in 535, the last three furlongs being fun in 37 3-ss. Both had a bit in hand. The two-year-old Chelandry is ; a nicely turned filly and is to make her first appearance next week. V Rajanya (Tremaih) was not troubled to run three furlongs in 39 2-ss. He is still slightly lame after working. j There was little between Royal Message (Cameron) and Boy Lu (Gilchrist) at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 1-5, tho first two occupying 25 l-ss. Tho " stablemates, Tooley Street (Kearns) , and Miss Appellant (Treinain) were 1 travelling comfortably on terms at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.19 1-5, J the first three being run in 38 2-ss. ' Tooley Street has mado splendid pro- ] gross during the last two weeks. * La Vie (Gilchrist) had a shade the hotter of Hackenschmidt (Nicholson) ( at the finish of half a milo in 50s, the 1 first furlong being run in 12 4-ss. La i Vio is working in pleasing style and should show up at Te Rapa. The effort i of the novice Hackenschmidt was full i of promise. Gamos (Markwick) sprinted i three furlongs in 33 l r ss. After taking 41s for the first three, Valspear (Tre- i main) was not doing his best to .register 1.20 for six furlongs. . i The two-year-olds King Dazzle (Mc- f Grath), Wapaugh (Green), Esquire i (Markwick) and Stonehaven (Gilchrist) f finished in that order in a sprint from i the six-furlong peg to the four in 255, tho first furlong in 12 l-ss. King Dazzle and Wapaugh displayed plenty of dasji aud aro promising. l After running tho first two in 25 4-ss, f Odtaa (Gilchrist) got to tho end of 1 five furlongs in 1.3 4-5. He hit out at- < tractively and came homo in fine stylo, i On tho tan, Leo Colossus (Korr)a j completed the last half-mile of his work t easily in 57 4-ss. Full of Scotch (For- ] gus) and, Norse Lady (Hearn) worked t in company over ifour furlongs in 58 £ 3-ss. Full of Scotch, who looks in great j heart, hit out with plenty of freedom. Pasture (Cameron) was under restraint ( while covering six furlongs in 1.29. £ ' C CERNE ABBAS FOR STUD ' AN INTERESTING MATING ' Mr. C. E. Draper has sent his Now * Zealand Cup winner, Cerne Abbas, to 1 Eldorslie, to be mated this season with ( Solicitor-General. The mating is an interesting, one, for it supplies a double , cross of Carbine and Marco, and also i tho very Successful inbreeding to Pil- ] grimago, which has done such a lot of good for Lord Derby's stud in England. ' The Elderslie Stud property is to be 1 handed over to the new owner, Mr. E., ( Steele, now living at Windsor Park, Oamaru, next February, and a new company to carry on the stud on up-to- i date lines is now in process of forma- I tion. 1
