DANGEROUS BEND

OTAHUHU HIGHWAY PORTAGE ROAD CORNER ACTION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL A decision to request the authorities controlling the Great South Road at the intersection of Portage Road, Otahuliu, to take steps to improve the conditions for traffic was reached at the Otahuhu Borough Council meeting on Monday night. The highway bends at that point and, it was stated, on account of the indifferent lighting and tho confusing alignment of the centre line in the concrete where the Ofahuhu and Mount Wellington sections of the concrete meet, northbound traffic is liable to run off the road. In recent months there have been several accidents of that nature, and motor-cars have overturned in tho deep watercourse on the west side of the road. Tho Transport Committeo of the council recommended that tho attention of the Mount Wellington Road Board be drawn to the conditions in view of tho complaints received concerning the danger, and advise that the council is prepared to co-operate with the board in making representations to the Main Highways Board. The committee convenor, Mr. A. Murdoch, said it was a dangerous corner.
