CZECHS' NEW LEADER
SELECTION OF PRESIDENT DR. CHVALKOVSKY FAVOURED PRAGUE. Nov. 12 The designation of a successor to Dr, Benes is likely to be made at the weekend. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Chvalkovsky, is the strongest candidate for the Presidency. The turn of opinion against Dr. Benes is further revealed by the action of a Czechoslovak shipping company, which has cancelled the name of its finest ship Edouard Benes. The newspaper Venkov demands the withdrawal of Dr. Benes' photographs from stamps. Dr. Chvalkovsky informed party leaders that while he was abroad for three years as diplomatic representative lie sent constant but vain warnings on the trend of Czech foreign policy. His counsels were not followed.
Dr. Chvalkovsky, who is 53 years of age, was director of the political department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1920, and then was successively Minister to Japan, the United States, Germany and Italy.
