ROWING TRIALS

THREE CLUBS ACTIVE GOOD FORM DISPLAYED NOVICES HAVE FIRST RACE Auckland and Wnitemata were the only rowing clubs that raced on the Tamaki Drive course on Saturday. St. George's was busy preparing for the John Thomson Memorial Cup event, to be held next Saturday, and University will not start trial racing until next week. West End enjoyed better water conditions than the clubs racing at Tamaki Drive, where tho squally westerly wind raised big seas at times. Auckland boated the biggest entry of tho day with seven crews, which included a number of novice oarsmen having their first race. Waitemata had an entry of five crews for its race for Mr. E. C. Bridgens' trophies. Form generally was good, although some of tho Auckland Club's novices rowed out of time. WAITEMATA CONTEST BRIDGENS TROPHIES DECIDED . V The Waitemata Boating Club held trial fours for trophies presented by Mr. E. C. Bridgens, a vice-president of the club. Five crows assembled for the races, the novices not being at full strength. The first heat resulted as follows: —T. C. Conway (stroke), A. Hogg, K. Vincent, W. Churches. 1; C. Cairns (stroke), P. Vokes, E. Molloy, F. Weaver, 2; J. S. Jones j (stroko), W. Brown. A. Mikkleson, F. Austin, 3. Cairns led to the half-way mark; where Jonos and Conway drew level, and the crews raced neck-and-neck. Conway then began to show out. with Jones close behind, but the former drew away to finish two lengths in front of Jonos, who was two lengths ahead of Cairns. Following is tho result of the second heat:—H. Spoon (stroke). F. L. Phillips. T. Gallagher, J. (stroke), G. Brown, F. McGechle, T. Martin. 2. Sweoney got the better start, but Spoor, rowing well, passed tho leader, and was a length ahead at the bridge. Sweeney, with a fino effort, reduced this advantage, but Spoon maintained his lead to tho judge. Spoon led at the start or tho final ond. swinging woll, he moved away, In spite of Conway's strong challenges, to win by a Rood length. WEST END EVENT PEACOCK SHIELD TO MACDONALD Tho annual trial fours for the Thomas Peacock Shield wore decided on Saturday by members of the West End Rowing Club. Tho long course was used. Tho heats were keenly contested, the'final resulting in a rather easy win for Macdonald's crew. The first heat crows wore:—W. Parnell (stroke),. L. H. Barton. G. S. Bigelow. I. Rasmussen, E. F. Raper (stroke), L. I. Skinner, T. Chester, G. Carder. This was a groat race, W. Parnell gaining the decision. Crews in the second heat wore.—H. M. Macdonald (stroke),' J. G. Howo. R. C. Bigelow, I. R. C. Osborne (Btroke). M. H. D. Conway, N. V. Conway, J. W. Kelly. Macdonald made a strong effort at half-way and established a good lead to gain the verdict. Macdonald and Parnell mot in the final, the former leading for the greater part of the distance to win. HENDERSON CUP COSSEY WINS AT AUCKLAND Six novic« oarsmen had their first race in tho Auckland Club's trial event for the Henderson Cup. They acquitted themselves well. The contests were very even and the results were In doubt to the finish. Crews in the first heat wero:—E. Goodwin (stroke), V. Walker. C. Kidri, L. Wallace; C. Chamberlain (stroke), W. Boon, T. Seibert, W. Cole; G. Owpring (stroke), W. MrGfegor, P. Mathleson, L. Sullings. The crews got away very fast, with Oxspring and Chamberlain showing out first. When the crews settled down, Oxspring had established a slight lead, which was gradually increased to a length, with Goodwin two lengths behind Chamberlain, who was lying second. Chamberlain s crew shortened the advantaga of OxspringV crew, but the latter rallied and crossed the line with a bare halflength lead. The second heat crews were:'—D. Simmonds (stroke), W. Harper, T. Mathias, J. Smythe; J. Dickson (stroke), J. Guineven, H. Williams, M. Forster. Getting away first, Simmonds established a useful lead, which he maintained to the finish. Crews in the third heat were:—O. Cossey (stroke), G. Hewlett, E. Field, G. • Stenberg; H. Jellie (stroke), D. Elwood, G. Boon, C. Brierly. Cossey had the advantage at the reef, where both crews qnickcned their pace. Cossoy, however, drew away to win by two lengths. The final, contested by the crews of Oxspring, Simmonds and Coss»y, was rowed in very rough water. Cossey and Oxspring showed out first, and soon established a good lead on Simmonds. Cossey's crew was eroinpr netter, and at the gap had half-a-length's lead. Ho drew away toward tho finish to win by a length. Simmonds was a few lengths away third.
