STEAMER TO RAGLAN
MORE SUPPORT REQUIRED DANGER OF WITHDRAWAL [from our own correspondent] NGARUAWAHIA, Saturday "If the Raglan Dairy Company has to close down it will be the greatest setback in the history of Raglan," said Mr. W. G. Vernon, at a meeting of the Raglan County Council this week. The remark was prompted by a letter from the Raglan Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, in which it was stated that advice had been received from the Northern Steamship Company, Limited, that, unless it received more support, it would have to discontinue its Onehunga-Raglan coastal service. The dairy company stated that it the oervice was withdrawn the consequence would be very serious for the whole district, as road and rail freights via Frarikton would be higher, and there would be a great increase in the cost of maintaining the roads, owing to the heavy loads of butter-fat, fertilisers and other commodities that would have to be transported over them. The chairman. Mr. H. W. Wilson, Raid he could not understand why Raglan farmers should send their cream to Frankton instead of to Raglan. Mr. H. Johnstone suggested that the same freight concession allowed on fertilisers carried bv train should he allowed on fertilisers carried by steamer. The chairman said the council would use its influence to assist the dairy company to maintain the steamer service.
