MEMORIAL PROPOSED

LATE SIR G. RICHARDSON: EX-SERVICEMEN'S TRIBUTE THE SUGGESTED FORM ; 1 Proposals for an ex-servicemen's memorial to the late Major-General Sir George Richardson were submitted to the quarterly meeting; of the Auckland Returned Soldiersi' Association last night by the president, Sir. J. W. Kendall, and after discussion the matter "was deferred for further consideration of the foim that the memorial should take. Mr. Kendall said that from his own acquaintance with Sir«Georgo he knew that the latter had not favoured memorials which served no useful purpose. He had discussed, the matter fully with the executive and .with representatives of affiliated clubs, and it had been agreed to suggest that the memorial Bhould take the form of a cottage in permanent materials in .the association's settlement scheme at Muriwdti. There was good reason to believe that financial support would be received from all Returned Soldiers' Associations in the Dominion and.from associations of ex-servicemen and exservicewomen. In all probability a general appeal would produce sufficient funds to build two cottages. A motion on the lines of the chairman's statement was proposed, but the meeting adopted an amendment that the matter be deferred and that the erection of a memorial hall in the settlement be considered.

The" president reportel'that a legacy of £IOO from the estate of the late Mr. R'. M. V. Abbott hild been utilised for the complete renovation of one of the cottages on the association's Muriwai property, and that work would shortly be commenced on another. Application had been made to the Government for a share of art union proceeds in 4sid of the ischeme, but no decision had been given.
