DRIVE IN AUSTRALIA
ALTERNATIVE IF FAILS COMPULSORY TRAINING AGAIN (Received November 11, 12.45 a.m.) CANBERRA, Nov 10 A spectacular drive to increase the strength of the Australian mjlitia forces to 70,000 men is being initiated immediately by the -wartime Prime Minister and present Minister, of External Affairs, Mr. W. M. Hughes, and the Minister of Naval, Military and Air Defence, Brigadier G. A. Street, assisted by the Minister of Civil Aviation and Defence Works, Mr. H. V. Thorby. It is generally understood that if the campaign, fails the Government will be compelled to revert to compulsory training, to which the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A, Lyons, is at present opposed.
PARTY CONVENTION VOTE SYDNEY, Nov. 10 The annual convention of the United Australia Party rejected a motion recommending reintroduction of compulsory military service, but decided to urge the Federal Government to estffclish a voluntary regular army.
