EYE COLOUR IN PIGS

DARK SHADES PREFERRED SCIENTIFIC SUPPORT LACKING Many breeders, supported by Darwin's statement that blue-eyed cats are generally supposed to be deaf, have a decided prejudice against light colour in the eyes of livestock such as pigs, doj'N, cats and even horses. The contention is that light-coloured eyes are invariably linked with some constitutional weakness which may, through hereditary concentration and transference, become lethal in a family or type. No doubt for this reason Australian judges of pigs are displaying a definite preference for eye colour in the relative order of: dark, hazel, blue and pale. So far as present research in this direction has gone, no valid grounds for the objection to pale-coloured oyos have been discovered, hence this characteristic cannot be looked upon as a serious fault, hut as it seems to lower the value of the animal in the opinion of a large number of buyers, pale colouring in pigs' eyes must be considered a drawback which should not be encouraged by selective mating. .
