HUTT PARK FORM

FERRY POST IMPRESSES BRILLIANCE OF MIAZAIRE SOUND EFFORTS/BY TONEE > Tho Wellington Trotting Club's October Meeting on Saturday was notable for the brilliant performances registered by two of 0. S. Donald's charges, Ferry Post and Mazaire. The track in its fast state was conducive to first-class racing. J Mazaire overshadowed the improvers, and there is little doubt that ho should have won a double instead of having to be content with a, iiret and second placing. Tho ground ho lost at tho start of tho Short Handicap would have completely extinguished the chances of most novices, but ho produced a wonderful burst of speed over tho last half-mile to get wit'iiin a length of Glenholme.

Later in tho day he again made a lapse at the start of the Novice Handicap, but tho raco was run slower early on this occasion, and ho reached the leaders at the distance to win going away. Tho efforts were most impressive, and it is a pity that he does not possess better barrier manners for tbere is no reason to dispute his class. Without detracting from tho merit of Glenholmo's win he should have been second to Mazaire as tho race was run. Glenholmo has done comparatively little racing, and as it is reasonable to expect him to reap some benefit from the experience he should continue to pay his way among tho improvers.

Peter Smith Palls The Aucklander Peter Smith had every chance in both of his two engagements, but he is a heavily-topped horsa who should do well as the result of racing experience, and lie should not be long in the maiden rji:aks. He is a free goer with plenty of style. Cavatina was a trifle disappointing after her encouraging efforts at the last Wellington meeting, as she failed on both occasions on Saturday, especially in her first start.

Palomar is a very solid customer, but he was not particularly impressive. He lost all chance at the start in the Short Handicap, but Iliad ho been good enough he could have scored in the Novice Handicap. He ran to the front at the end of about five furlongs, and was pacing so well when the field turned for home that his prospects appeared second to none. However, ho did not respond under pressure and finished only a useful third. Tho honours among the trotters must be awarded to Tonee, whose two starts yielded a second and a first. -No doubt he was much improved as the result of his racing at Hutt Park last month, and it wa,s pleasing to see him showing something of his true worth on this occasion. Hei did, not appear to be at all comfortable going round the bends, but cfn the straight stretches he hit out with plenty of fireedom. Tonee's defeat in the Petono Handicap can be attributed to the fact that his driver attempted to take him the front too e;irly and, in gaining the lead, was forced to race outside three sulkies *for nearly s, furlong. As it was he went down to Timworthy only by a narrow margin. There is not a great deal to look at in Tonee, but there is no gainsaying that he i* a most promising trotter. Timworthy and Sylvan Timworthy gave a jnost convincing display to win the Petone Handicap, and it is a pity that he cannot he relied upon to go solidly all the . way. In his success ho was one of the smartest to begin and it was his ability to hold this position that stood him in good stead in a tight finish. Any chance he possessed, in the President's Handicap" was eliminated when he failed to strike a gait in the first furlong. Timworthy is well enough bred to do anything, and should be good if he becomes solid.

Sylvan, a stable-mate of Tonee, was most She >vas in the leading bunch in each "of her two outings, but faded out on both occasions when the pressure was applied. The form was definitely below that of which she is capable, and it may prove wfse to forget the efforts when she is nest produced, The spoils in the improvers' classes were divided by Perula and Windsor Lass, and of the two the latter' was the most impressive. She was having her first start o'i the season, but this did not stop her from 'going - to the front three furlongs from home and winning decisively. Her dam, Rose Logan, is a very short-bred mare, being by Logan Pointer from Rosalie, by Wildwood. How ever,, the manner in which Windsor Lass ran on suggested that she would score again before very long. Perula had to withstand some very determined challenges in his success, but he displayed courSfee and there was no element of luck about the victory. It was his first start of the season, but he had previously exhibited a good turn of speed, his best performance in finishing second to Two's Loose in the New Zealand Derby last season. It is to be regretted that the October Handicap was run at too slow a pace for any real test of stamina. , The first mile was run at little better than a 2.20 rate, and it was with the intention of quickening 1;ho speed that 0. S. Donald took Ferry Post to the front. Admittedly it would have taken a pretty good horse to have defeated the winner on the day, but it would have been better had the event been a true test of stamina instead of a sprint home, asi it turiied out to he. Ferty Post is one of the best horses in his class that has been produced for a long time and, his future is bright. He can both sprint and stay, and now that he has mended his manners. he should experience no trouble in making the highest- grade. Navy Blue Consistent Navy Blue is most consistent and no matter how far the distance she can always be relied upon to give of her best. However, she is probably best at a short distance, which she evidenced by the manner in which she accounted for the open sprint. She was particularly well driven, on each occasion, and the reinssnanship of M; Stewart played no mean part in the.result. • Toorak is another consistent pacer, but in his case he does not seem good enough to win when the class is strong. No horse deserves a win more than tlio Wrack pacer, and his run of minor placings must be exasperating to. liis connections. Silver Guy was a complete disappointment, and his form was too bad to be true. He failed to pace with his usual freedom in either start and was really the first horse beaten.;
