VICTORIA DERBY TEMPEST RUNS GOOD SECOND AJ AX DEFEATS ROYAL CHIEF ST. CONSTANT PERFORMS WELL (Received October 30, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Oct. 30 The Victoria Racing Club's Spring Meeting was opened at Flemington today in fine, sultry weather and before a large attendance. Owned by the New Zealander Mr. W. Devon and trained by J. T. Jamieson. Karl.y Bird scored an easy win in the Wakeful Stakes. Talkalot finished wull, but Lady Montague had every chance. Marly Bird cost her present owner 2300gns. at Mr. Alan Cooper's dispersal sale. Owned and trained by l'har Lap's mentor, H. Telford, Urania finished brilliantly to win the Maribyrnong Stakes. He was bred by his owner and ft big offer was refused for him after tho Mooneo Valley races last week, when he finished second to Esperanto in the colts' division of the St. Albans Handicap. Aspire went a good race and was beaten only in the last few strides. Zonda was responsible for a fair effort, but Merry Smile tired. Beaucaire and Beau Mari were never dangerous. Ajax had little difficulty in winning the L. K. S. MacKinnon Stakes, which made his 12th successive win. His full record is 19 wins and threo seconds from 2.'? starts and his total stakeearnings £23,075. Loyal Chief put up a game effort, but could make little impression on the winner over the concluding stages. Nevertheless, it was a good Melbourne Cup trial. Silenus surprised by finishing third. Nuffield had a perfect run in the Derby and never left the rails, but at the finish he was all out to beat Tempest, whose first defeat it was in his last nine starts.
