PLAT AT AKABANA CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS H. D. BRINSDEN TAKES PLATE The tenth annual champion of champions golf contest was decided yesterday on the Akarana links. The course was in good order, hut a strong wind from the south-west made accurate golf very difficult. The match resulted in a triple tie, as A. E. Browne (North Shore), P. G. F. Smith (Akarana) and S. E. Chappell (Orakei) all returned totals of 157. The tie was decided on the best individual round of the day and consequently Browne, who had a 75 in the morning, was the winner. .Details of the scores were: — A. E. USEFUL LEAD FORTUNES CHANGE Although A. E. Browne had a useful lead on the field at the conclusion of the momintr round, the fortunes of .the (tame changed rapidly in the afternoon. Ee commenced bi.dly after lunch, as with a six at the first. & seveii at the third and an eisrht at the sixth he required 45 to reach the turn. The totals of the leading players at this stasre Wl >re:—Chappell. 117; Browne find Smith, mo. Two holes later Ctianpell and Smith were in the lead with 128. Chappell havinit dropped strokes at the 11th. where he required a seven. With four holes, to fro. Smith was leading the Orakei champion by one stroke, while Browne was two strokes more After playing the 15th Smith was two strokes better than his two rivals, but he dropped a stroke to each of them at the short 16th. After playing the next hole it appeared certain that Smith would win the title, as he was one stroke ahead of Browne and two better than Chappell. However, he pushed his second out into the rough, recovered too strongly, and then Carded a six. Browne hooked hi? second .lust clear of the bunkers and he made no mistake in obtaining a five to tie. Chappell a good attempt to win the event, and hp holed his putt for a four at the last. The winner of the Champions Plate. H. p. Brinsden. played solid golf throughout the day and his total of 153 was a very creditable effort. In the morning he was out in 40 and eight fours and a three coming home enabled him to share the honours with Browne for the best round of the day. In the afternoon Brinsden commenced weakly with a six and a seven and he reached the turn in 42. Again he had a string of fours coming home, to finish with a <B. his total of 153 being four strokes fewer than that ot the champion of champions. Both D. Coyle and JE. H. Earle played well. Jack won from T. J. Virtue by default; W. H. Birkenhead beat L. Stewart, 4 and 3; H. W. Carbury beat J. Budge, 3 and 2. A Stableford bogey played in conjunction resulted in a win for J. W. Fawcett, with a card of 30, 11—41. Following were the next best cards.—T. C. Conway. 32, 8—40: W. R. Woolhouse, 34, 4—38; S. Tucker, 25, 10—35. , j , The Tyler Memorial Cup, played for throughout the season, resulted in a win for M. Kalman, with the excellent total for four medal rounds of 289. He was closely followed by J. C. Mitchell and N. W. Wheeler, with 290 each. The next best were M. Kiely, 298;. A. G. Ryland, 299; E. R. Bayley, 300.
MAUNGAKIEKIE CLU& In the final of the junior match play competition T. J. Sheahan beat L. Stone. The final results in the fourth round of the Veterans' Cup were:—D. F. McCormick beat W. Davie, 3 and 2; S. Barclay beat J. B. Gilmore, 4 and 3; F. M. Shortt beat J. S. Milne, at the 19th; I. McOwan beat F. J. Hintz, 7 and 5.
