NEW ZEALAND FILMS
lilir, —Now that New Zealand definitely is bidding for a place in the film industry, would it not be advisable that censors were appointed to view every film purporting to shew the history and customs of the country before it leaves for abroad? Already films have been presented that are s libel on the Maori people. In one, a beautiful poi dance was filmed and shown to music with a different rhythm, with the most appalling effect. There were many other inaccuracies. There is another being shown iift Auckland at tho present time which tells of the Maori—a "conquered" race —living on reservations! Not only do these pictures give an entirely erroneous idea of present conditions, but other films, equally inaccurate, may be taken as historically correct v and increase the difficulty already experienced in perpetuating only the real facts. A censorship is urgentlv needed, and at least one member of the Maori race should be on the board. • E. D. M. Doust.
