MAORI IMPRISONED
t JUDGE'S GRAVE VIEW FOUR YEARS' DETENTION [FROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON. Friday "If what one reads in the papers is true you would have been lynched in the United States," said Mr. Justice Blair in the Hamilton Supreme Court to-day, when Hoti Mohi, aged 22, a Maori bushman (Mr. N. S. Johnson), appeared before him for sentence for attempting to commit rape at Ngongotaha. Counsel stated that prisoner was under the influence of liquor at th® time. _ . . _ His Honor said prisoner was liable to be flogged and to serve a long sentence. Owing to the effects of liquor lie was probably not altogether responsible for his conduct. He inflieted no injury, but that was probably due to the fact that help came to the girl in response to her outcry. The prisoner was ordered to be detained for reformative purposes for a period not exceeding four years.
