THE SAUCER OF MILK
Original by Eleanor McKinnon, M.8.6. (12) Mark, the grey tabbv-cat, lay on the verandah, licking his already shining coat. When this was done to his satisfaction, he rolled over on to his side and lay with- his head on his silvery paws. He began to think of pleasant things and stirred happily as he thought of the large saucer of creamy milk he had just finished. Ah, who was that? Someone with more milk? He lazily opened one eye and then watched astonished, as he saw his mistress placing a saucerful of some white substance on the ground. What was it? "Milk, milk," he murmured greedily and lay still until his mistress went back into the house. Then, Mack moved slowly forward and slunk along by the wall, so that he would not be seen. Nearer, nearer, and he was there. He looked. Yes, lovely thick milk. Nobody was about and nobody had seen him, but one thing he did not see, was a. pair of newly-cleaned shoes. Mack began to lap the milk with his long, pink tongue. He jumped back in surprise. The supposed milk, bad a terrible taste, and it hung to his whiskers in large white blobs. Milk never was like that, he thought amazed. Someone came to the window and Mack heard his mistress laughing so he crept away to tin. l barn to nurse his wounded pride. Mack had found that a shoe-cleaning mixture is not a very nice kind of milk to drink.
