RING EVENTS

SOME FINE JUMPING BETTER GROUND CONDITIONS HARNESS HORSES APPEAR ATTRACTIONS FOR SPECTATORS [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] HAMILTON, Friday With ground conditions in first-class order, a marked improvement in the performances in the jumping competitions was noticeable at the ltoyal Show-to-day. The ring dried up remarkably well this morning and, when the hunting events were continued this afternoon, there was a firm footing at every fence.

Apart from the Royal champion hunter competition, which resulted in a win for Mrs. P. H. Smith's Over-She-Goes, principal interest centred in the second heat of the Dominion Jumping contest. On the first day, few of the horses wore greatly at home in the soft going, with the result that to-day's performances generally overshadowed those in the previous heat. The results of the second heat were: —J. Goodwin's Mataroa, 1; Miss K. Fisher's Little Irish, 2; Airs. P. H. Smith's Over-She-Goes, 3; C. C. Merrill's Spark, 4; C. B. Roan's Scout, 5. These five competitors, together with the five placed animals in the first heat, are eligible to compete in the grand final to-day. With the motor-car a übiquitous feature of modern life, the harness horse is something of a novelty. As a result, considerable interest was evinced in these classes, which also attracted a good measure of entries. A considerable number of southern animals competed with local horses, the championship being gained by Mr. W. Johnstone's Leeleeta. Jn securing the blue ribbon for ponies, Messrs. Gee and Gillander's Merry Widow achieved its third Royal Show championship, its previous successes being at Invercargill and Palmerston North.

Outstanding success was obtained by Mr. Andrew Grant, of Fairlie, in the Clydesdale section; in annexing the championships in a quality class for both entires and mares. In addition, the same exhibitor's champion working gelding. Dandy, was regarded by Waikato enthusiasts as being one of the finest horses of its class seen in the district. Mr. P. Skousgaard's Heather was also looked upon as a very satisfactory type of cart horse, although the competition in this and allied clauses was somewhat disappointing. Additional awards are as follows: —
