WHARF GAMBLING
FOUR MEN FINED COMPLAINTS TO POLICE "We have had several complaints about gambling on the wharves, and waterside workers themselves take exception to this gambling," said SubInspector Fox, when four men were charged in the Police Court yesterday with playing a game of chance on Central Wharf on September 17. "There are some men going to the wharves with no intention of getting work," said Mr. Fox. "The Harbour Board officials, stevedores and some of the non-union workers known as 'seagulls,' who really want work, are complaining. These gamblers are pjfring to the wharves for the purpose of gambling with men looking for work. In future I am going to ask that they be dealt with severely." "You can Expect these fines to be increased if any further cases are proved," said Mr. C. R. Orr Walker. S.M., in imposing fines of £3, with 10s costs, on each of three men who did not appear. They were Desmond George Church, Leslie Patrick O'Kane and Teua To hoe. Another man, Archibald Roy, who appeared and pleaded guilty, was fined £2, with 10s costs.
