Powell, of Whangarei is staying at 'the Esplanade Hotel* Devonport. 1 Mrs. E. M. Brooksbank and the Misses N. E. and H. H. Brooksbank of England, are at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. A. I. Johns, Bassett Road Remuera, is visiting Tauranga, where she is the guest of Mrs. H. P. Shaw. Mrs. W. E. Russell, accompanied by her husband, has left Devonport to spend a short holiday at Rotorua and Tauranga. Miss Ruth Hobbs, of Esplanade Road Mount Eden, will leave Wellington on Thursday by the Wanganella to spend two months in Melbourne. Miss Barbara Forte, of the Stewart Karitane Hospital, Wanganui, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Clyde Heather Brett Street, St. Heliers Bay. ' Mrs. F. Cummins (Wellington), Mrs. A. L. Vickers (Te Arohaj, Mrs. W. & Wilson (Palmerston North), Miss E° W. Nancarrow (Dunedin;. Miss E. Greenwood (Motueka) are at th» Station Hotel. Play for this season commenced on the lawns of the Warkworth Croquet Club recently. The president, Mrs. G. Robertson, welcomed members. Two competitions were held and were won by Mrs. D. croquet and Mrs. G. Fitzgerald, ladder competition. Mrs. J. Corsie and her two daughters, of Auckland, are in the Orkney Islands, wrote our London correspondent on October 3. After a few months there they will return to London where the Misses Naida and Peggy Corsie hope to obtain experience of secretarial work before going back to New Zealand. Miss Frances M. Powell, of Auckland, left by the Duchess of York on September 30 for Montreal en route to New York, wrote our London correspondent on October 3. She will spend two months in the United States, and on December 6 she will join the Monterey for Auckland. An address entitled "The Single Eye" was given by Mr. T. W. Silcock to the Women's Progress Club last week. Mrs. C. Dickens presided. Songs were given by Mrs. Armstrong Kevea, her accompanist being Mrs. A. M. Doull. Hostesses were Mrs. Hubbert, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Deverick and Mrs. Neave. An address was givj?n last week by Mrs. A. M. Hutchinson to the Otahuhii branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union dealing; -with the work of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. A special collection was taken up for the benefit of the Maori work of the union. Afternoon tea was served. Mrs. Ecoersoll presided Mrs. K. B. Smith and Miss J.* SI. Murchie, of Auckland, mad? a tour through the United States anVl Canada on their way to Scotland, ojur London correspondent on -Qc£)ber <5. They visited relatives in Scotland, and while in Glasgow attended the Empire Exhibition. At present they are; at Royat, Auvergne, France. They will next go to Paris. Many guests attended an evening held at Wentworth ' recently in aid of the work carried out by the Sisters of Mercy at Monte Cecilia College. Vocal items were given by Mrs. A. Kerebs, Mrs. F. Menzies, Mrs. J. Hall, and Master Ted Outram, their accompaniments being played bv Mrs. Oldbury-Jones, of Wellington, who also t>layed pianoforte solos. Recitations and tumorous items were contributed by Mrs. C. Peck, Miss Noreen Peck, Miss Valerie Collins, Mr. F. Kay-Stratton, Mr. J. Hall, and Master F. Hall. Mrs. J. Hall was assisted in receiving her guests by Mrs. P. Hall. Several competitions were held during the evening. Visits to many junior and senior high schools in the United States were made by Miss Sybil A. S. Parker, of Lower Hutt, while on her way to Europe, wrote our London correspondent on October 6. She also visited Canada, after which, site left for Paris. There she resided at tl»e College Franco-Britannique, where she studied French. On account of the international crisis 6he went to England at the end of September. Miss Parker plans to leave London at the end of October to continue her studies in Paris until the close of the year. She expects to arrive back in Wellington in the middle of Februarv.
