INVADERS HALTED
ADVANCE ON CANTON STRONG CHINESE OPPOSITION SEVERE FIGHTING REPORTED HONGKONG FOOD SHORTAGE By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received October 18, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 18 Apparently the swift Japanese advance toward Canton has definitely been halted, says the Hongkong correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. The Japanese officially admit they are meeting severe opposition from 120,000 Chinese, who are entrenched opposite 60,000 Japanese at Wongtong, where the fighting has been severe since dawn yesterday. The rapid widening of the front is perturbing the invaders, whose reinforcements are arriving more slowly from Bias Bay than the Chinese from Canton. The Japanese Consul-General at Hongkong lias offered to replenish the colony's food shortage with supplies from Formosa. The chief postmaster at Auckland, Mr. W. G. Cooper, advises that telegraphic traffic for Canton can only be accepted at the sender's risk.
