MELBOURNE CUP

RULING FAVOURITE PROSPECTS OF NUFFIELD. RECORD OF THREE-YEAR-OLDS _______ • ROYAL CHIEF IN COX PLATE BY PHAETON Nuffiold'B successes in the Australian Jockey Club's Derby and the Caulfield Guineas hare brought the chestnut son of Heroic into prominence the Melbourne Cup. He is estimated by his connections to be superior to Hall Mark. That is a high recommendation,

for Hall Mark won the swo Derbies and the Melbourne Cup in 1933. Mr. C. B. Kellow bred both colts and J. Holt trained them.

Nuffield's impost in the Melbourne Cup is 7.7, which is lib. less than the weight carried to victory by Hall Mark five years ago. The Victoria Derby, which comes up for decision on October 29, will give Nuffield an opportunity of further establishing his right to bo accepted as the leading three-year-old of the season. In the 77 contests to date for the Melbourne Cup three-year-olds have won on 22 occasions, as follows: st. lb. 1863—Banker, by Boiardo .. .. 6 4 1864—Lantern, by Muscovado .. 6 3 1800—The Barb, by Sir Hercules .. 0 11 1870—Briseis, by Tim Whiffler .. 6 4 1877 —Chester, by Yattendon .. 6 12 1880 —Grand Flaneur, by Yattendon 0 10 1883 —Martini-Henry, by Musket .. 7 5 1890 —Auraria, by Trenton .. ..74 1896—Newhaven, by Newminster .. 713 1809—Merriwee, by Bill of Portland.. 7 6 1900—Clean Sweep, by Zalinski .. 7 0 1903—Lord Cardigan, by Poeitano.. 6 -8 v 1906 —Poseidon, by Positano.. .. 7 6 1908—Lord Kolan, by Positano .. 6 10 1909 —Prince Fcote, by Sir Foote .. 7 8 1015—Patrobas, by Wallace .. ..7 6 1916 —Sasanof, by Martian .. .. 6 12 1919 —Artilleryman, by Comedy King 7 6 1921 —Sister Olive, by Red Dennis.. 6 9 1927—Trivalve, by Cyklon .. .. 7 6 1932—Petor Pan, by Pantheon .. 7 6 1933 —Hall Mark, by Heroic.. .. 7 8

Sixteen of the winners had previously won Derby honours, namely, Banker, Lantern, Briseis, Chester, Grand Flaneur, Martini-Henry, Auraria, Newhaven, Merriwee, Poseidon, Prince Foote, Patrobas, Artilleryman (deadheater), Trivalve, Peter Pan and Hall The treble, A.J.O. "Derby, Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup, has been achieved on four occasions, the winners being Grand Flaneur (1880), Poseidon (1906), Trivalve (1927) and Hall Mark (1933). Poseidon's score of winning the two Derbies and the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup still standß as the Australian record for a three-year-old.

ROYAL CHIEF IN AUSTRALIA HIS NEXT ENGAGEMENT The W. S. Cox Plate, which is to be run at the Moonee Valley meeting on Saturday, may be expected to see Royal Chief included in the field of contestants, for a recent Melbourne cablegram stated that the New Zealand horse was carrying himself remarkably well. The W. S. Cox Plate carries a stake of £IOOO in addition to a trophy valued at £IOO. The race is run over nine and a-half furlongs at standard weight-for-age, with no allowance to geldings.

STUD NOTES >- RECORDS OF GREAT SIRES '§ When Martian's total on the winning sires' list was raised to £372,907 several years ago, the prediction was offered that it could be expected' to head the list for a good stretch of years so far as New Zealand and Australia" was concerned, and this view is strengthened as the seasons come and go. Following is a list of the amounts" won in stakes by the progeny of leading sires in New Zealand and Australia:— Martian (1901), by Martagon— £ Otterden 372,907 Comedy King (1007), by .Persimmon—Tragedy Queen .. 324,579 Magpie (1914), by Dark Ronald —Popinjay .. .. .. 315,350 . Linacre (J901), by Wolf's Crag— Lismaine .. .. 291,857 The "Welkin (190-1), by Flying Fox —Woodbury .. .. 290,313 . Maltster (1897), by BUI of Portland—Barley .. .. 235,224 Absurd (1908), by Sundridge— Absurdity .. ... .. 283,854 Wallace (1892), by Carbine— Melodioai 276,677 Valais (1913), by Cicero—Lily or the Valley .. .. .. 263,679 Llmond (1913). by Desmond— Lindal 263,528 Grafton (1894), by Galopin—Maid Marion 260,232 •Rossendale (1912), by St. Frusquin—Menda .. .. ■. 256,133 •The stake earnings of Rossendale's progeny are computed as follows: —England, £22,369; America, £11,146; Australia and New Zealand, £222,618. KILBRONEY AND LUCTTLLUB Although Kilbroney and Lucullus were included in the obituary list several years ago, they are still represented on the New Zealand turf. Up to last, season the progeny of Kilbroney had captured prize-money to the amount-of £237,053,' 'and, dating up to the same period, Lucullus' progeny had won £151,495. Fairly scouted in England and sold at auction for the paltry sum of 25 guineas is the story of Lucullus, * who, in the face of not being advantageously placed in Auckland, won a good place on the winning sires' list. CAULFIELD CUP WINNER Buzalong, by The Buzzard—Saccharine, this year's winner of the Caulfield Cup," is bred on stout lines, a double strain of Musket through Carbine and two strains of St. Simon through William the Third and Simmer respectifely, being features in his pedigree. FOREIGN-BRED SIRES Four foreign-bred horses are included this season in the list of sires serving in Australia, namejy:—Actor, by Ortello; Brueghet, by Pharos; El Cacique, by Tracery; and Genetout, by Vatout.
