America, dollars . .. •. 4.b.i BROWN EWING EARNINGS INCREASE IN EXPENSES [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] DUNEDIN, Monday Although both' turnover and gross profit again show a considerable increase, the whole of the increased profit earned by Brown. Ewing and Company, Limited, a drapery firm, during the year ended August 15, was taken up,by increased expenses, mostly due tu higher wages. After allowing for depreciation and land and income taxes, net profit is £2026, compared with £2372 in the 1937 period. The usual dividend of 5 per cent on preference shares is declared, and the directors recommend payment of 4 per cent on ordinary shares, unchanged. After payment of these dividends, tho sum of £329 will bo carried forward, against £553 brought in. WAIKATO EGG PRICES RISE OF ID A DOZEN [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday ' The Waikato Egg Marketing Committee announces a Id rise in the retail price of hen eggs. Current rates are now Is 5Jd a dozen for A grado eggs and Is 4jjd a dozen for B grado eg«s. Duck eggs remain unchanged at Is 4d for A grade and Is 3d for B grade. The rise in the price of hen eggs is due to a falling off in supplies and to the steady demand existing. The previous rates were the lowest reached this season.
