SYPHONED FROM CAR TANK COURT IMPOSES £5 FINE Caught by the owner rti' a motor-car syphoning petrol from the tank into his own car in Green Lane 011 the night of August 12, Stuart Haslett Crompton pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing two gallons o£ petrol, when he appeared before Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Sub-Inspector Fox said complainant's car was moved some distance, and there was a trail of petrol between it and accused's car. Accused became indignant when complainant spoke to him, and went to the police, alleging false accusation. Later he admitted the offence.
"This type of offence has been prevalent in Auckland in the 'last few months," said Mr. Fox. "Accused, who has been several times before the Court, had a gallon tin and a length of rtibber hose in his car when he committed the offence." Accused said he had never previously stolen petrol, and the magistrate Raid it was a peculiar coincidence that 110 was caught on the only day when he had all the necessary paraphernalia to syphon petrol. A fine of £5 was imposed, restitution of 3s lid also being ordered.
