BRIGHT MEETING

MR. BAILEY SCOEES CONFIDENCE IN SUCCESS FAITH IN PRIVATE INDUSTRY Cheers, whistles and stamping greeted the appearance of Mr. A. S. Bailey, National candidate for Roskill, who was given a most enthusiastic and friendly hearing by an audience of about 300 people in the Capitol Theatre, Dominion Koad, last night. Tho speaker had tho sympathies of the audience throughout, and tho only interruptions were of a helpful nature. The Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. R. J. Mills, presided. Of the largo audience, there were only three or four audible Labour supporters, but after several futile attempts to interrupt the speaker, who scored freely, the interjectors loft tho meeting. "I atn old-fashioned enough to believe that the future of the country is bound up with the success of private enterprise," said Mr. Bailey. "The average New Zealander no more desires Government aid than charity. The fact that industry, makes a profit seems to be a major crime in this country to-day. "We already have evidence of distrust between employers and employees, and a wedge is being driven between them up to tho point of blackmail," continued the speaker, when pointing out that he favoured Unionism, but objected to its present compulsion. "I will endeavour to put New Zealand back on a sound financial basis," added Mr. Bailey.

Voices: You'll be there, there is no need to worry. (Cheers.) The social security scheme, rising prices, extravagant public works and increasing taxes came in for trenchant criticism by tho speaker. Dealing with the housing scheme, Mr. Bailey stated that the National Party would give the people the opportunity of buying thu State houses and owning them. A hearty vote of thanks to and confidence in Mr. Bailey was carried without dissent and amid loud cheering. One good-humoured member of the audience called for cheers for the Labour Party and was met with loud and prolonged booing. Tho meeting concluded with three cheers for "tho new Prime Minister."

CONFIDENCE EXPRESSED MR. HULTQUIST'S CAMPAIGN LARGE SLIP CAUSES DETOUR Unanimous votes of thanks and con fidence were carried at meetings addressed by Mr. A. G. Hultquist. Labour M.P for Bay of Plenty, at AVairata in the Waioeka Gorge, at Taneatua. and at Edgecumbe, on the Rungitaiki Plains. After his Wairata address Mr. Hultquist was delayed in reaching Taneatua as a result of a large slip which .came down on the Waiotahi Bluifs. causing him to make a detour of 10 miles. Mr. F. B. Grace, president of the local branch of the Farmers' Union, presided over a large gathering, and in welcoming Mr. Hultquist to Taneatua paid a tribute to the work he had done as member for the electorate.

In reply to a number of questions in regard to education and the transport of children to secondary schools, Mr. Hultquist said that the department was prepared to pay up to 7s G'l a week toward the cost of transport to high schools. Jn very few places did the cost exceed that sum, and where it did he pledged himself to work whole heartedly in the direction of obtaining assistance from the Government to cover the entire cost.

After his address at Edgecumbe Mr. Hultquist met a number of railwaymen and discussed with them the socia l security scheme. He obtained an assurance that they would work wholeheartedly for the scheme, and cooperate with him after the election in an endeavour to have some of the apparent anomalies in the scheme, in so far as they affected railwaymen, in vestigated. During the week-end Mr. Hultquist addressed the first meeting he has held at Oliope Beach. A vote of thanks was carried with prolonged applause.
