MERCURY ON THE WAY GOOD PROGRESS MADE (Received October 7, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 0 The Mercury* the ppper component of the "pick-a-back" Mayo aircraft, left Dundee for Capetown at 1.20 p.m. yesterday on an attempt to break Fly-ing-Officer A. E. Cloustou's time record td the Cape, and the world's long-dis-tance record held' by ltussia. The Mercury was in the vicinity of the North African const at 8 p.m. today, Greenwich mean time. Flying-Officer Clouston, New Zealand'airman, in November, 1937, flew from England to Capetown with Mrs. Kirkby Green in 1 day 21 hours, and made the return flight in 2 days 9 hours 23 minutes. They thus beat Mrs. Mollison's outward record, by more than 33 hours, H. L. Brooks'[return by nearly, 39 hours and Mrs. Mollison 0 out and back recorcl by 88, hours...
