NEW SOUTH WALES MOVg APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] SYDNEY, Sept. 20 The New South Wales Cabinet has appointed Mr. Gordon Young, of Montreal, Canada, as director of education in New South Wales. Mr. Young, who is 33 years of age, will receivo a commencing salary of £950 a year.
The Minister of Education, Mr. Drummond, said that in addition to Mr.. Young's qualifications as a physical culture director, he also had a good academic record, and an obvious flair for organisation. It was part of the plan that Mr. Young would build up a trained staff of teachers. He Mould be expected to direct all physical education activities. . . The Premier, Mr. Stevens, said early this year that the aim was to extend physical education to everv child in the State. "For normal children," he said, "provision will be made in the school curriculum for suitablo exercises. Children found to be suffering from slight ph3'sical defects will be classified into appropriate groups, and, under the direction of special instructors, will be given remedial exercises to correct those defects. "The school medical service will carry out a survey of physical defects needing special treatment, and will determine the tvpe of treatment, best suited to the needs of individual pupils." The Physical Education Advisory Committee, appointed by the State Government to recommend methods which can be adopted in New South Wales, has issued a preliminary report in which it asks for the co-operation of individual citizens and physical training organisations in launching a physical fitness campaign.
